Motorola announced the third sibling to the X series in 2015 with Moto X force. Moto X force is the most expensive phone in the series packing in slightly better internals than that in the Moto X force.

The main feature the separates the Moto X force from every other flagship in the market is the shatterproof display making the display unbreakable. The phone was launched at Rs. 49,999 for the 32 GB version and Rs. 52,999 for the 64 GB version.

So is a shatterproof display worth the extra money?

Let’s find out!

Moto X Force is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz with 3 GB RAM with either 32 GB or 64 GB of onboard storage. The phone has Adreno 430 GPU for top of the line gaming experience as one would expect from Qualcomm’s best processor at the time. Phone is running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box which is now upgradable to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

The phone has single nano-SIM slot along with 4G support on both. The phone also offers micro SD card expansion upto 256 GB, supports Turbo Charging, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v4.1, microUSB v2.0 and USB OTG. Everything is powered by a 3760 mAh battery which is more than adequate. Motorola has not launched any phone with a fingerprint scanner in 2015, So Moto X force also lacks a fingerprint scanner which is present on almost every device in the segment.

Overall Moto X force is a really compelling device when it comes to hardware and packs powerful specifications in line with other flagships.

Moto X force continues to exhibit the design language for Motorola in 2015 i.e. strong and sturdy. Moto X force feels premium due to metallic chassis and a ‘ballistic nylon’ back making it extremely grippy and durable. It also feels really nice in hand due to Motorola’s signature back curve ranging from 7.6-9.2 mm. At the back of the device the metallic strip holding the camera, flash and the Moto dimple looks appealing and classic. The textured power button is easily differentiated from the volume rockers on the right all of them being tactile offering good feedback.

The phone weighs around 169 grams being on the heavier side. The phone also has a water repellent nano coating which makes it water resistant to some extent. The phone also sports dual front firing stereo speakers which are rare and excellent making Moto X force an ideal multimedia device. There’s no LED notification light either but Moto display(described later) more than compensates for it. The main selling point however for Moto X force is the shatterproof display which protects the screen of Moto X force from drops and seriously is unbreakable unless you go extreme.

Overall Moto X force is very well built, but it lacks a premium feel that other devices in this category offer. However shatterproof display truly is a game changer for those who consistently drop their phones.

The front of Moto X force is dominated by a 5.4 inch quad HD(1440 x 2560) AMOLED display making it a phablet with pixel density of about 540 PPI. The screen is protected by Motorola’s shatterproof technology making it an unbreakable screen. The colours on the screen are vivid and sharp with a lot of detail due to quad HD resolution. Every colour on the screen pops out with those deep blacks associated with an AMOLED screen. The screen is also bright enough to be legible in direct sunlight. Our beloved Moto display works great here, better than its siblings i.e. Moto X play and Moto X style.

Overall Moto X force has a sharp and vivid display and competes head to head with other flagships.

Moto X force sports almost stock version of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with few Motorola additions like Moto Voice which lets you control your phone by your own control phase, Moto display which displays your notifications at a glance every time you lift your phone or waving your hand over it, Moto assist and Moto connect. All these additions are useful and increase the productivity and ease of use of the phone. Moto X force was also one of the first devices to receive Marshmallow update other than nexus in 2015 making it a future proof device.

Overall Moto X force gives one a pure Android experience along with the promise of timely updates making it a really pleasant experience.

Moto X force is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 SoC octa-core processor clocked at 2.0 GHz divided into a quad-core 2.0 GHz Cortex-A57 & quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A53 cores along with Adreno 430 GPU. This processor is known for the performance it offers with some over-heating issues but Moto X force is able to keep its cool. Everything runs butter smooth due clean stock Android with no lag whatsoever. Multitasking is also a breeze on the device with quick app load times and good memory management due to 3GB of RAM. The processor was also able to load heavy titles with ease and gaming experience on the large screen with stereo front facing speakers is amazing.

The benchmarks landed at around 81,000 in AnTuTu and 36,667 in Quadrant. The call reception on the phone is also really nice with good signal strength and noise cancellation enhancing the experience. The battery life was also excellent due to a 3760 mAh battery and a power efficient AMOLED display outperforming every other flagship.

Overall performance on the Moto X force is really nice and consistent similar to that in Nexus 6P.

Moto X force sports a 21 MP rear camera sensor with phase detection auto-focus, colour correcting dual tone LED flash, 1/2.4' sensor size, 1.1 µm pixel size, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, panorama, auto-HDR, 4K Video(2160p@30fps) etc. It also has a 5 MP front camera. Both the cameras have an aperture of f/2.0 which allows them to capture a lot of light. Outdoors in good lighting conditions the rear camera is just amazing ! Pictures are sharp, Vivid and with a lot of detail. The pictures are also closer to reality not extra pumped up like the Samsung Galaxy S6. The camera is also able to adjust the exposure right and has nice dynamic range. As we move to indoor lighting conditions the pictures start to degrade and grains start to appear in photos but still pictures are decent but in extreme low lights camera performs poorly and is unable to get sufficient light due to high megapixel count. The camera present in the LG G4, iPhone 6S, Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Nexus 6P perform better than the one here in low light. The front snapper is also a really nice snapper and is comparable to other 8 MP sensors in the market. There is also omission of OIS which makes it harder to focus in night shots but in video digital stabilisation more than compensates for it. The camera app is way too simple and lacks important manual controls.

Overall Moto X force offers a decent camera but other flagships offer a better camera experience due to better low light images and a more immersive camera app.

Moto X force is a really nice device and offers a lot for the money like:

•   Excellent quad HD AMOLED Screen

•   Stock Android Experience with timely updates

•   Expandable memory with USB OTG support

•   Top notch performance and built

•   Shatterproof Display

But misses out on some key features like:

•   No Fingerprint Scanner

•   No OIS or Laser auto focus

•   Not best camera in segment

•   Lacks a premium feel

•   No dual SIM

In 2015 Moto X force was a brilliant phone that did most things correct but was priced really high thus devices like Nexus 6P, Samsung Galaxy S6 etc. offered better value for money due to a better features list. However Moto X play still was a great device to have but in 2016 there has been a major price cut which has placed Moto X force in the high-mid end segment at Rs. 34,999 making it a great value for money even today.

Motorola India has launched the MotorolaX Force mobile in India and is currently being sold for prices starting from Rs.27990 at Flipkart, which is the lowest price in India as on 03rd July, 2020. Motorola has been priced in the sub-premium (20k-30k) segment. Some other mobiles that you can consider in this segment are OnePlus 6T, Vivo Y15, Vivo Y19, Vivo NEX.
