In Moto X 2014 was the flagship for Motorola and was a really nice phone but was priced premium fighting the flagships in 2014. In 2015 Motorola tried to provide with an alternative to the flagships by offering top of the line hardware at a relatively lower price with the Moto X style. Moto X Style can be considered as a big brother of Moto X play and a true successor to Moto X 2014. The phone is priced competitive at Rs.29,999 for the 16 GB version and Rs. 31,999 for the 32 GB version.

So is it worth it ?

Let’s find out !

Moto X Style is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz with 3 GB RAM with either 16 GB or 32 GB of onboard storage. The phone has Adreno 418 GPU for top of the line gaming experience and is running on Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box which is now upgradable to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

The phone has dual nano-SIM slots along with 4G supported on both the slots. The phone also offers micro SD card expansion upto 256 GB, supports Turbo Charging, NFC, dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v4.1, microUSB v2.0 and USB OTG. Everything is powered by a 3000 mAh battery which is decent. Motorola has not launched any phone with a fingerprint scanner in 2015, So Moto X style also lacks a fingerprint scanner which is present on almost every device in the segment. Other than that Moto X style is offering some really good specs, almost similar to that of LG G4 at a lower price.

Overall Moto X style is a really compelling device when it comes to hardware and packs powerful specs which can compete even with phones priced higher.

Every year the size of the X series has been increasing, Moto X style is no exception being sized at 5.7 inches the phone feels huge and can be difficult to use with one hand. Moto X style feels premium due to metallic chassis and a silicon back making it extremely grippy and durable. It also feels really nice in hand due to Motorola’s signature back curve ranging from 6-11 mm. At the back of the device the metallic strip holding the camera, flash and the Moto dimple looks appealing and classic. The textured power button is easily differentiated from the volume rockers on the right all of them being tactile offering good feedback.

The phone weighs around 179 grams being on the heavier side. The large screen though makes it a hard phone to use single handedly but is still manageable to very slim bezels. The phone also has a water repellent nano coating which makes it water resistant to some extent. The phone also sports dual front firing stereo speakers which are rare and excellent making Moto X style an ideal multimedia device. There’s no LED notification light either but Moto display(described later) more than compensates for it.

Overall Moto X style is very well built, There are prettier all glass devices from samsung and sony in the segment but none of them seem to be as durable and sturdy as Moto X style!

The front of Moto X style is dominated by a 5.7 inch quad HD(1440 x 2560) IPS LCD display making it a phablet with pixel density of about 520 PPI. The screen is protected by gorilla glass 3 making it scratch resistant to some extent. The colours on the screen are vivid and sharp with a lot of detail due to quad HD resolution. The screen is also bright enough to be legible in direct sunlight. Our beloved Moto display works great here though it seemed better on an AMOLED display in Moto X 2014.

Overall Moto X style has a sharp and vivid display and is comparable to not only phones in the segment but also to the flagships.

Moto X style sports almost stock version of Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with few Motorola additions like Moto Voice which lets you control your phone by your own control phase, Moto display which displays your notifications at a glance every time you lift your phone or waving your hand over it, Moto assist and Moto connect. All these additions are useful and increase the productivity and ease of use of the phone. Moto X style was also one of the first devices to receive Marshmallow update other than nexus in 2015 making it a future proof device.

Overall Moto X style gives one a pure Android experience along with the promise of timely updates making it a really pleasant experience.

Moto X style is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 SoC hexa-core processor clocked at 1.8 GHz divided into a dual-core 1.8 GHz Cortex-A57 & quad-core 1.44 GHz Cortex-A53 cores along with Adreno 418 GPU. This processor is known for the performance it offers without over-heating and Moto X style is no exception. Everything runs butter smooth due clean stock Android with no lag whatsoever. Multitasking is also a breeze on the device with quick app load times and good memory management due to 3GB of RAM. The  processor was also able to load heavy titles with ease and gaming experience on the large screen with stereo front facing speakers is amazing.

The benchmarks landed at around 52K for Antutu and 27K at Quadrant which are better than devices like LG nexus 5X and LG G4. The call reception on the phone is also really nice with good signal strength and noise cancellation enhancing the experience. The battery life was average however ranging from 3 to 3.5 hrs of screen on time due to a high resolution screen.

Overall performance on the Moto X style is top notch beating the competition due to pure Android and a capable processor.

Moto X style sports a 21 MP rear camera sensor with phase detection auto-focus, colour correcting dual tone LED flash, 1/2.4' sensor size, 1.1 µm pixel size, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, panorama, auto-HDR, 4K Video(2160p@30fps) etc. It also has a 5 MP front camera. Both the cameras have an aperture of f/2.0 which allows them to capture a lot of light. Outdoors in good lighting conditions the rear camera is just amazing ! Pictures are sharp, Vivid and with a lot of detail. The pictures are also closer to reality not extra pumped up like the Samsung Galaxy A5. The camera is also able to adjust the exposure right and has nice dynamic range. As we move to indoor lighting conditions the pictures start to degrade and grains start to appear in photos but still pictures are decent but in extreme low lights camera performs poorly and is unable to get sufficient light due to high megapixel count. The camera present in the LG nexus 5X performs better than the one here in low light. The front snapper is also a really nice snapper and is comparable to other 8 MP sensors in the market. The cameras on the Moto X style are really nice but are not as good as those found in Samsung or Apple flagships. There is also omission of OIS which makes it harder to focus in night shots but in video digital stabilisation more than compensates for it. The camera app is way too simple and lacks important manual controls.

Overall Moto X style offers awesome cameras for the price and may not be best in the world with better cameras present in phones like nexus 5X but the camera here is able to hold its own against the competition.

Moto X style is a really nice device and offers a lot for the money like:

•   Excellent quad HD Screen

•   Stock Android Experience with timely updates

•   Brilliant 21 MP camera

•   Expandable memory with USB OTG support

•   4G LTE on both SIM slots

•   Top notch performance and built

But misses out on some key features like:

•   No Fingerprint Scanner

•   No OIS or Laser auto focus

•   Heavy device - difficult to use with one hand

In 2015 Moto X style was a really compelling device but there was no area where the Moto X style out and out defeated the competition, It was a jack of all traits but master of none. It was able to hold its ground against devices like Oneplus 2, Nexus 5X etc. and remained an excellent value for money but 2016 has been tough with devices like Oneplus 3, Xiaomi MI 5, Samsung Galaxy A5 crunching in. In 2016 thanks to a price drop Moto X style is still a good option for those who want a sturdy phone with decent performance, timely updates and a more than capable camera.
